Coin Refection; abstraction of emotion

as i told you in the last post, the next will be about coin. yes, all of this picture is a photograph of coin, reflected. the idea that lead me to these picture come from a funny but very useful video of DigitalRev TV that told us how to do high speed photograph, and they use an air soft AK-47 in this case. i mean it. this is the video if you want to see it.

the spirit of this photograph for me is, abstraction of emotion. by dropping all that coin from the air and take the picture in the moment they rebound, i try to take abstract shape they created together, and even beyond that, i fell some kind of freedom and liberty feeling after seeing this picture. i hope you do so :)
 

i take this picture on a very sunny shiny Indonesia's hot afternoon, on my opened (none wall) part of my Balinese house, without any backdrop. so i must do some trick to make it black, with flash.
here is the trick:

first, get your camera on manual mode and set the exposure to darkest level you can get, but don't forget about your flash's sync speed.

then get an external flash gun to illuminate your coin, i suggest to use that because you can put it anywhere from any angle, so it give you flexibility

eventually my floor is a shiny reflective one, so i use it to make the reflection effect of my air dropped coin photograph

i put the camera on my floor to get a 90 degree shot angle, and the flash in the left side of the picture

then told someone to drop your coin (and then take it again latter) and take the picture, the result will be very surprising in every shot :D

to get the best, i edit my picture by changing the color preference into black-white monochrome, and do some adjustment in contrast and exposure
